Watch What You Say

Ephesians 4:29

Don't use bad language. Say only what is good and helpful to those you are talking to, and what will give them a blessing. (NLT)

Did you ever notice how language among teens has really sunk to very low levels? When you see groups of teens today it is not uncommon to hear them swearing very loudly at each other and also at adults.

Hearing this among teens, it makes me wonder why this has happened. Have we, as adults, not taught our children the truth of this verse? Have we not given them a good example to follow?

Ephesians 4:29 is really self-explanatory. Don't use bad language. Period. If you read it in the NIV it says do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths. To me that takes it a bit further; no off-color jokes, no unnecessary criticism, no negativity. Speak only what is good and helpful; things that build others up.

Do we follow the example of Scripture in our relationship with our teens? When we speak to them, do we do so in a loving manner? When we have to discipline or reprimand them, do with do it constructively for their own good or out of anger because they've annoyed us?

If we expect our teens to follow the truth of Scripture, we have to model correct behavior. In this instance, it is very important that we TALK the TALK - because how we express ourselves in our speech is a measuring stick of the closeness of our walk with God.

Take this verse to heart and be an example of pure speech to your teens.
